THE NATIVE HAWAIIAN BELIEF
He Ali'i Ka 'Aina; He Kauwa ke Kanaka
The land is chief, man is its servant

The relationship between people and the land is sacred. In Hawaiian culture, the land, or ʻāina, is considered a living entity with its own spirit and power, often regarded as an ancestor. The belief is that the land sustains life, providing everything necessary for survival—food, shelter, and resources. Therefore, the land is viewed as a chief or an aliʻi, a figure of great respect and authority.
Humans, on the other hand, are seen as stewards or servants (kauwa) of the land. This relationship dictates that people must care for the land, nurture it, and protect it as a sacred duty. This stewardship is not just about physical care but also involves maintaining a spiritual and cultural connection with the land, ensuring that it remains healthy and productive for future generations. In the Hawaiian worldview, the land is not something to be owned or exploited but is to be respected and revered.

"The decisions we make today should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future"
THE SEVENTH GENERATION PRINCIPLE
Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Philosophy
We, as Native Hawaiians, identify ourselves as kama'aina, a term that translates to "people of the land." Aloha ‘Āina is our Kuleana - loving and caring for the land is not just an option but a fundamental responsibility.

We have a duty to protect the land, preserve its resources, and ensure that it continues to sustain life for future generations.
